Words with purpose | Margarida Texeira | Content Writer

This week is Freelance Writer Appreciation Week, and there’s no better way to celebrate it as interviewing one of the amazing freelancers on our platform. We loved to hear the story of Margarida and how she has built her careeer as a freelance Content Writer for non profits and for purpose organization. We started from the beginning…

How did you become a freelance writer?

I always loved to write and when I started working as a freelancer, I was still a student at the university. It was easier for me to break into the freelancing world than to find a job or internship to make some extra money because I could work on my own time. I just looked for freelancing websites online and managed to find clients here and there. That was about four years ago, and I’m very happy with what I have accomplished since then. I managed to specialize in communication for social change and content writing for nonprofits, which was my goal from the start. But, as any freelancer knows, you do not always get to do the projects you want when you are just trying to grow your portfolio. So, it is very satisfying to get to the point where you can really just focus on what you are passionate about.

What do you love most about freelance writing online?

I love that you have to adapt your skills to meet different writing projects. I think any creative person will get bored of doing the same sort of things over and over again, and this way I am always engaged in new topics and learning about new things. Working with nonprofits and social enterprises is extremely interesting because the topics are usually related to sustainability and social justice. Plus, I’ve been very fortunate with my clients so far, therefore I usually receive challenging assignments that encourage me to grow both as a professional and as an activist.

What is your best project so far?

I think my favorite project is to write articles for the website of a Serbian women’s organization focused on combating human trafficking. I get to do research on fascinating topics and I have the opportunity to create engaging content for an organization that is making a real difference in the lives of women and girls with a feminist approach. It’s exactly the sort of job I love and it makes me very happy to know I can contribute with my skills.

Why did you join Work for Impact?

I joined Work for Impact because, as a freelancer focused on communication for social change, it was difficult to connect with for-purpose organizations on other websites. Other freelance websites also tend to be a race to the bottom in times of prices and quality, so I needed alternatives. I had been looking for a platform such as Work for Impact for years, so I was incredibly happy to find out it was finally created!

What motivates you?

As a communication professional, what motivates me is being able to translate into words, images and video the amazing work that for-purpose organizations are doing and mobilizing other people to support them. It’s very satisfying to know your work is having an impact, and the goal of communication for social change is exactly that.

How would you contribute to make the world a better place?

I would like to contribute with my skills to give marginalized people a voice and produce engaging communication materials that rally people for social change. In a world oversaturated with information, crafting good communication materials can really make a difference.
