Meet Heather M, a freelance writer driven by purpose. She crafts persuasive copy and educational content for nonprofits, B Corps, wellness & more.

How to become a good freelance writer? Heather has a clear point of view on this: "Good writers know how to get to the heart of what needs to be communicatedand thats what I do with my clients, whether theyre in wellness, retail, nonprofit, tech, or travel".

Heather is part of our freelancer community, she's based in the US and she loves writing for a good cause. Let's get to know her a bit better.

Heather, what is your area of expertise?

Im a writer who can write copy that persuades and content that educates. I often give strategic input to my clients as well. I have an ad agency background, so I know the right questions to ask so I can efficiently jump into a project.

How did you become a freelance writer?

I majored in Journalism and worked in banking and insurance marketing roles when I caught the advertising bug. I spent a year applying to ad agencies before landing an official copywriting role at an agency specializing in direct mail. (Remember that?)

I always liked the idea of having a flexible schedule, so I signed up for a how-to freelance class through the Boston Ad Club called, Yes, Im in My Pajamas. No, Im Not Unemployed. It was taught by a copywriter who was, as they say, living the dream. I started freelancing when my daughter was born. Ive worked in a variety of industries and for many companies, but I can happily say, its freelance all the way from here on out.

A Smarter Way to Build Your Global Team

What do you enjoy the most about being a freelancer?

The best part about my job is that Im always learning something new, whether thats how technology is simplifying a doctors job or what programs are available to help people living on a low income. I also like collaborating with a team and flexing my creative muscles to come up with a headline or phrase that communicates clearly with a bit of panache.

If you would not be freelancing, what would you be doing?

Writing a novel. I wrote the first chapter on my phone while on a plane a few years ago. Need to make more time to get back to that.

What are your goals? (Also not professionally speaking)

I recently learned how to knit, and I want to keep improving my skills so I can make a cover for my hot water bottle. I love deadlines at work, but in my personal life, its more about enjoying life in the here and now. (Former yoga teacher here!)

What makes you feel youre contributing to a better world?

Sharing useful information with people through my writing. I especially like working with Certified B Corps and nonprofit organizations that are aligned with helping others. You never know when one little tip can compel someone to act.

Favorite organization, and why?

Lately, its Patagonia. Their marketing campaigns make an impact.
