Wilderness, South Africa, is where we land today to meet Michael a copywriting professional who has chosen to put his knowledge at disposal of for-purpose organisations.
He has a clear point of view on the direction of work in the near future:
I use my copywriting skills to make the world a better place. I believe that a world where business for benefit/purpose will save the human race. I want to be a part of that shift. I am doing this by using my persuasive writing skills to bring money and support to businesses that align with these values.
And last but not least our traditional questions:
Why did you join Work For Impact?
As a copywriter that's on a mission to make the world a better place, Work For Impact is a great fit for me. I believe that ethical and regenerative businesses and organisations have the power to change the world. I want to help these businesses get their message out to the right people. So we can all make a difference together. In a world filled with bad news, it's nice to know that making a difference is as easy as changing your spending habits. Don't you think?
What motivates you?
To borrow a phrase from Malcolm Gladwell, I'm motivated by the tipping point. I believe that, as a global population, we are close to an important and historical tipping point. All the signs are there. The support for business for benefit/purpose over profit is rising. People are demanding that we all do better. It's gaining momentum. And on the flip side, the people who don't think this way are fighting harder than ever before. Because they sense that they're losing. Things are changing. Slowly at first. But a flood of change is coming. It's a matter of time. And being a part of that change is inspiring.
How would you contribute to make the world a better place?
In my professional life, only working with businesses and organisations that make the world a better place. Persuasive copy has an incredible power to motivate people to take action. Whether that's buying from your business or donating to your cause. I only work with the types of businesses that I want to see more of in the world. In my personal life, it's all about the small changes. A billion imperfect vegetarians are more effective than 1000 perfect vegans. I strive to be the imperfect vegetarian. It's an easier goal to hit. And it's easier to motivate people to go along with you for the ride. Antagonising people who aren't doing enough does nothing. You have to get them on your side first.
Favourite organisation?
Impossible question to answer. There are way too many to mention! Two that come to mind are Surfers Not Street Children and Eden To Addo.
Surfers Not Street Children is an organisation in South Africa that empowers disadvantaged youth through the power of surfing. It's inspiring stuff.
Eden To Addo is an initiative in South Africa that's reestablishing an ancient wildlife corridor that's been blocked off by humans and private property. I believe that the future of nature conservation is in establishing corridors between wild areas. Because diversity can't thrive in pockets. It needs to move.
